Building Back to School Reading Tools

Hello Hello,

I hope you are enjoying these precious last days of summer.  It seems as though everyone is getting into the swing of back-to-school, so I'm here today to talk about reading comprehension with #TeacherMom's Building Back to School giveaway and link up.
Don't forget to check out the freebie at the end of this post!

I created this pack to help third graders become familiar with key phrases and wording commonly used on standardized tests.  However, the more I used it, I think it really can be used any time of the year because it focuses on finding evidence in the text, and covers all literature Common Core State Standards.

It is broken up into four weeks.  Each week has varying types of texts, including: informational, fables, folk tales, poetry, biography, and fiction.  Each week also has a writing prompt based on the texts.  Graphic organizers are provided for each writing prompt.  Here are some examples.

This is an example of a biography passage about Louis Pasteur with accompanying comprehension questions.

Notice how the question set focuses on unknown vocabulary terms, author's purpose, and using evidence from the text to answer the brief questions.  There is also a brief writing prompt.  Easy test preparation, or comprehension practice in just minutes a day!

Here is an example of a fiction passage with its question set which focuses on main idea and point of view.

Graphic organizers are included for each writing prompt. Check out this one on character traits and adjectives.

Compare passages and examine character traits to explain the lesson of the fable.

Answer keys are provided for each week, so they are super quick to make sure your students are on the right track.

I hope you are having a great week.

Today we're linking up with Hashtag Teacher Mom's Building Back to School Linky.  This week it's all about classroom tools to help your room run smoothly from day 1.

We all know it's important to set up a positive classroom culture; so learning can take center stage.  But some students need more practice than others remembering how to treat one another, so I created this Bully Prevention/Friendship pack.

It is full of printables, a bulletin board display, and a game to help get your students talking about what good friends do and how others feel when they're not treated well.  You can read more about this awesome resource here.
